Personal Trainer Of The Day, Leanne Lane, Shares Her Inspiring Story And Tips These Coming Holidays and Life In General
TELL US YOUR STORY, WHO ARE YOU AND HOW DID YOU START IN THE HEALTH AND FITNESS INDUSTRY?
Hi, my name is Leanne Lane, I am a 40-year-old mum of 2, I run my own studio and I work as a Personal Trainer, Group Fitness Instructor, Kettlebell Instructor and Mentor. I started in the fitness industry 12 years ago as a Group Fitness Instructor. I loved the role of motivator and teacher and expanded into boxing and outdoor training. I got into personal training about 9 years ago and have learned so much about exercise, so much about people and people’s bodies. These days I have a real interest in strength work via bodyweight and kettlebell training mostly and continue to educate myself about the body.
It was my personal transformation that started my education into training and nutrition. In my late teens, I suffered from anorexia, which was replaced by bulimia a few years later and continued for over 10 years. As I searched for a way to kick my disordered eating, I started looking to food as a fuel to make my body work well instead of a tool to medicate or beat myself up. I started to focus on what my body could do during exercise instead of how many calories or how much fat I was burning off. It has been a long road, a slow journey but a worthwhile and a permanent one. I lost 20kg and have kept it off, built a strong body and a strong mind, learnt many things and found myself in a job that I absolutely love and am passionate about. I am driven to share what I have learnt and help other people get to this comfortable place.

WHAT WERE SOME OF THE BIGGEST MISTAKES YOU MADE WHEN STARTING OUT IN THIS INDUSTRY?
Doing too much exercise!! Not respecting my body and doing too much high-intensity exercise along with too much work, not enough sleep, too much stress and always “pushing”. Too much of anything is not healthy. The other thing was impatience. I wanted to know everything now, I was eager to learn but a lot of what makes you a good trainer cannot be learned in a classroom or a book but comes from experience, time spent working with clients, they are the best teachers for the fitness professional.
WHAT MAKES YOUR GYM/FITNESS CENTER DIFFERENT FROM OTHERS?
I have tried to promote a non-competitive environment. One where everyone is made to feel welcome and supported, not just by me but by the other participants. I don’t do mass-produced and even during group classes, everything is tailored to the individual. I have developed a reputation of how to train people hard yet smart and within their current capabilities whether that be working around injuries, disabilities or just plain being unfit for now. I teach people to work with their bodies instead of against them and we definitely take a holistic approach covering all areas in their life including nutrition, exercise, thoughts/beliefs and other lifestyle factors.
WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST GUILTY PLEASURE WHEN IT COMES TO FOOD?
Sorry but I believe the word food and guilt never belong in the same sentence. Food is to be enjoyed but it should make you feel good so I indulge in things that treat the senses but still make me feel good. Think good quality dark chocolate, roasted macadamias, fresh raspberries. I do class coffee as my vice, I enjoy it organically, long black, topped up with coconut milk and cinnamon!
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR TIPS THESE COMING HOLIDAYS?
My motto when it comes to food is “give your body what it needs and make it taste great”. When you do this daily you shouldn’t feel the need to “break out” and go on a Christmas binge. When it comes to indulging in the things that your body doesn’t need (but your mind does) then I say think about portions, remember the magic is in the first few mouthfuls. If you would like to maintain your hard work then stay active and if you would like to maintain your body composition then I suggest the guideline of if you are drinking keep the food relatively clean and if you want to indulge in the works including the deserts then stay off the booze.
Exercise wise, if you are just getting into your fitness lifestyle then you need to build a base so keep up the consistency in your training over the holidays. Those seasoned trainees, you won't lose everything you have worked for by taking a week or 2 off. You will actually find your body thanks you for it and rewards you with increases in strength and even in improvements in body composition so factor in some downtime these holidays. Like everything all depends on who you are, where you are at and what your goals are.
Friends, family, laughter and play are all good for the soul, so make these things a priority this Christmas.
WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS OR PLANS THIS COMING 2015?
Finish the book I am writing! I love to write and I love to create and cook and I love to teach so writing a book on what I have learned makes sense. I am a one-woman show and the studio keeps me so busy that the book is started but still on the “to-do list”. Goal number 2, find a better work/life balance. But I most look forward to continuing to learn about the body and how it works and keep teaching people how to move better, how to live healthier, how to train hard but smart and helping them get strong, lean and fit and feel great in their skin.
