TELL US YOUR STORY, WHO ARE YOU AND HOW DID YOU START IN THE HEALTH AND FITNESS INDUSTRY?
I’m Dimity, Owner and Personal Trainer of Next Step Fitness. I am really passionate about healthy lifestyles, women’s journey back to health after childbirth, childhood obesity and kids education in forming healthy habits, and looking to improve the fitness of older adults as they move into retirement. I run outdoor fitness sessions and personalised training programs in each of these areas. The key focus for me is forming networks in the local community for people facing similar challenges.
After a long career in the advertising industry, I wanted to do something that combined my interest in health and fitness by giving something back. Having gone through four pregnancies, I learnt new things each time that I wish I had known the first time around. It was enough to make me want to learn more and educate others. For many people, a boost in self-confidence can make the world of difference and ignite the motivation to achieve their goals.
As we raise our boys, a healthy active lifestyle is very important and my Kids Bootcamp sessions offer a new fitness stream outside of the traditional sports, that is highly inclusive and lots of fun.
WHAT WERE SOME OF THE BIGGEST MISTAKES YOU MADE WHEN STARTING OUT IN THIS INDUSTRY?
Placing too much attention on the product side of the business when I needed to invest more on the business operations side.
- Trying to be all things to all people, before I landed on my niche.
- Conceding on too many things at the expense of my business.
WHAT IS THE MOST ABSURD EXCUSE YOU HEARD FROM A CLIENT AND HOW DID YOU RESPOND TO IT?
Client: My shoes were wet.
Me: 10 minutes into the session, everything will be wet! – next excuse?
WHAT MAKES YOUR GYM/FITNESS CENTER DIFFERENT FROM OTHERS?
We’re a community. We train hard and are results-focused but we also have a lot of fun and form great friendships. Next Step Fitness members are invited to attend many social and educational activities ranging from paddleboarding to intimate sessions with specific healthy specialists and forming teams to compete in events such as obstacle races and trail runs.
WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST GUILTY PLEASURE WHEN IT COMES TO FOOD?
Cadbury chocolate – I love it but I work it off!
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR TIPS THESE COMING HOLIDAYS?
Fill up on healthy snacks at home before going to a party.
- Keep yourself busy and stay away from the food table.
- Send leftovers home with friends.
- Pick the key events where you will indulge a little. You don’t have to go all out for every party.
- If you’re drinking, have a glass of water in between drinks.
- Replace coffee catch-ups with active catch-ups – meet for a walk, bike ride, or run and stay mobile.
WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS OR PLANS THIS COMING 2015?
Continue the growth of my business and introduce new sessions and techniques. As for myself, I want to compete in an overseas obstacle race.
WHO IS YOUR CELEBRITY LOOK-A-LIKE?
Tough one, I’d like to say Charlize Theron but my husband wouldn’t agree LOL.
